Research Notes on 1976 Swine Flu Vaccine
In 1976, former President Gerald Ford ordered a nationwide swine flu vaccine program.1 Acting on the advice of medical experts, Ford ordered the vaccine program to prevent a swine flu epidemic.2 Within weeks of the first vaccinations, there were reports of people developing Guillain-Barre syndrome shortly after taking the shot.1 Health officials canceled the vaccine program in December after people showed a reluctance to receive the vaccine.2

- Approximately 40 million Americans received the 1976 swine flu vaccine.1
- There was only confirmed death from 1976's swine flu.2
- More than 30 people died from the 1976 swine flu vaccine. At least 500 people were sickened as a result of receiving the vaccine.1
