The swine flu pandemic of 1976 began in New Jersey. In February of 1976, a recruit at an Army base died as a result of swine flu.1 Hundreds of other soldiers were hospitalized with swine flu following his death.1 Fearing a swine flu pandemic, President Gerald Ford urged every American to receive a swine flu vaccination.1 Soon after the vaccine program began, reports of people developing Guillain-Barre syndrome as a result of receiving the vaccine spread.1 President Ford ordered the program halted in December of 1976.2

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recorded 1,098 cases of Guillain Barre syndrome that were related to the swine flu vaccine.2
  • According to reports, 25 people died as a result of complications related to having the swine flu vaccine.2
  • The swine flu strain of 1976 appeared to be closely related to the strain that caused the 1918 swine flu outbreak.2
