Research Notes on 1918 Flu Pandemic vs. Swine Flu

The H1N1 virus that causes swine flu is a strain of influenza type A that is a derivative of the H1N1 virus that caused the 1918 flu pandemic.1 In 1918 a flu called the "Spanish Flu" spread rapidly through the Central United States. This flu was able to replicate and also spread through pigs.2 This flu has adapted over the years into the current H1N1 virus that we are seeing today.2

Fast Facts:

  • Currently there is no vaccine like the flu shot to protect against the H1N1 virus.3
  • Homeopathy was used during the 1918 flu pandemic and saw only a 1% mortality rate while doctors saw a 30% mortality rate.4
  • In 1918, the effects of the flu on the swine population was unknown.5
