Research Notes on 18 Pressure Points for Fibromyalgia

There are 18 pressure points used in diagnosing fibromyalgia. Pressure points are localized points around joints, but not the joints themselves, that are tender to the touch.1 The pressure points are symmetrical; they occur on each side of the body.2 The pressure points occur at the lower cervical (neck), second rib, lateral epicondyte (inner elbow), knee, occiput (back of the head), trapezius (top of the shoulders), supraspinatus (upper back), gluteal (upper buttock), and greater trochanter (hips).3 The exact cause of these pressure points is still unknown.

Fast Facts:

  • The pressure points occur at nine bilateral muscle locations.4
  • 75 other tender points have been found, but only the 18 listed are used in diagnosis.
  • Pressure points are not deep areas of pain, but superficial areas.
