Research Notes on 10 Most Influential Psychologists
B.F. Skinner leads the list of the ten most influential psychologists in a survey performed in 2002 in the Review of General Psychology. Following Skinner was Jean Piaget, Sigmund Freud, Albert Bandura, Leon Festinger, Carl Rogers, Stanley Schachter, Neal E. Miller, Edward L. Thorndike, and A.H. Maslow.1 The criteria of the survey included journal citations frequency, introductory textbook citations, and survey responses from members of the American Psychological Association.2
Fast Facts:
- William James ranked 14 in the list of most influential psychologists even though he was labeled the father of psychology.2
- Albert Bandura is most notable for the Bobo doll experiment.3
- In 1956, Stanley Schachter helped in co-writing the book When Prophecy Fails.4
- Neil E. Miller was noted as the father of biofeedback.5
- Edward L. Thorndike was known for laying the foundation for educational psychology.6
